MS 500i W Petrol Chainsaw
Powerful 5.0 kW chainsaw with electronically controlled fuel injection and heated handles
STIHL MS 500i: Pioneering chainsaw with fuel injection
The innovative MS 500i chainsaw from STIHL is the world’s first chainsaw with electronically controlled fuel injection. Its agile, performance-optimised engine accelerates very quickly. Thanks to its extremely successful lightweight design, this tool achieves an impressively low power-to-weight ratio of 1.24 kg/kW. This high-torque machine is a powerful solution for use in professionally harvesting large timber.
Working with the MS 500i means maximum operating enjoyment resulting from powerful performance. The machine features a simple start-up sequence as well as very good starting behaviour under all usage conditions. Sensory fuel metering guarantees that the mixture is directly adapted to the oxygen content of the air. Like the MS 462, this saw can be very easily pivoted and – thanks to its new bumper spikes and sprocket cover – can be guided close to tree trunks.
You can find videos showing you how to fill your machine with fuel and oil, fit bars and chains and start your chainsaw here.

STIHL Injection (i)
STIHL injection technology enables the MS 500i to achieve extremely high performance with extraordinarily low displacement and low weight. The saw uses innovative technology to achieve rapid acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in an unbelievable 0.25 seconds. The powerful saw is ready to use right away. Sensors measure air pressure and internal and external temperature, and pass information on to the control unit. This can use the identified values to determine the optimum fuel quantity and ignition timing.
-
Best power-to-weight ratio
Its revolutionary chainsaw engine technology, and resulting intelligent lightweight construction result in the best power-to-weight ratio on the market. The optimised design – with lightweight sprocket cover, more compact engine unit, flywheel with a low design height, and a reduced-weight crankshaft adapted to the low weight of the flywheel – makes work significantly more comfortable. The MS 500i is ideal for heavy timber felling, cutting into lengths, and pruning.
-
Decompression valve
The decompression valve is part of the easy starting system. The valve should be pressed before starting to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as reducing the effort needed to pull the starter rope. The decompression valve is semi-automatic; it must be pressed manually before starting, but then closes automatically.
-
Sensor-controlled fuel metering
In addition to the external temperature sensor, the MS 500i also has a pressure and internal temperature sensor in its engine. This measures the environmental pressure on start-up, and during operation it checks the engine temperature and pressure in the crankcase. The electrical voltage generator delivers the required speed information. The control unit processes these values, meaning that the system adapts to the conditions of use. The fuel is then dosed at the optimum level, quickly resulting in perfect running characteristics.
-
Heated handles (W)
These provide additional comfort in cold weather and can be engaged with a switch on the left handle as required.
-
Very easy to start, whether starting from cold or
The starting process is perfect, with no need for a start position, and easy access to the purger.
-
Anti-vibration system
Intense vibration at the handles of power tools can lead to long-term effects on blood vessels in the hands and arms. STIHL has therefore developed an effective anti-vibration system whereby the oscillations from the machine's engine are dampened which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles.
-
HD2 filter with radial seal
The new HD2 air filter, made from PET material and featuring a radial seal, prevents the intake of fine dust particles. The hermetic seal increases the service life of the engine and reduces wear.
-
Captive nuts
When changing the cutting attachment, you will not risk losing the nuts on the sprocket.
-
Variable-displacement oil pump
Allows a precise, demand-based delivery of oil. It's possible to reduce oil production by up to 50% in the E position. For very long cutting attachments or very dry wood, an additional volume of oil can be added by the user. similar to illustration.
-
Plunge guide
Marking has been added to the fan housing to assist with plunge cuts. This ensures better directional control and safe use of the machine during plunge cutting.
-
Optimised bumper spikes
The tooth length of the bumper spikes has been adjusted to account for the radial contours of trees. The saw bites into wood even better when cutting lengths and felling.
-
Side chain tensioner
The tensioning screw can be found on the side of the chain saw through the sprocket cover. This removes the need for contact with the sharp saw chain.
-
STIHL ElastoStart
STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user's joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle.
-
Tool free filler caps
Special catches on the fuel and oil tanks for easy opening and locking without the need for tools.
-
Optimised sprocket cover
The flatter, narrower sprocket cover with integrated slide rails reduces effort when pruning and ensures outstanding chip removal.
-
STIHL Ematic with new oil pump system
The new oil pump system allows a higher volume of oil to be delivered. This is especially useful in dusty conditions or when using a long guide bar.

Service Kit 17
With Service Kit 17 for STIHL petrol chainsaws you can carry out simple maintenance work on your chainsaw yourself. Regular standard maintenance, such as replacing the air and fuel filters and the spark plug, increases the service life of your chainsaw. And because of this, you yourself can help to ensure that machine components and parts are protected from dirt and damage and that the motor of your chainsaw always works reliably and with optimum performance.
Service Kit 17 for MS 500i includes the following components for standard maintenance:
- HD2 air filter
- Spark plug
- Fuel filter
The STIHL HD2 air filter is suitable for all operating conditions and can therefore be used universally. Thanks to its fine pores, it offers a very high filter quality and filters even the finest dirt from the intake air. By replacing the HD2 filter, the chainsaw motor is reliably protected against the ingress of abrasive dust. The performance is retained, the consumption is low and you can continue to start your STIHL chainsaw as easily as usual.
In order to maintain performance, it is also recommended to replace the spark plug regularly. This is the basis for clean combustion in the engine. The fuel filter keeps the fuel free of foreign particles before it gets into the engine. In this way, it protects the engine and ensures an improved longevity. This must also be replaced regularly in order to function reliably.
To replace the air filter and spark plug, it is best to use the practical combination wrench that you received with your STIHL chainsaw. A cardboard hook is integrated in the packaging of the service kit itself. This allows you to easily remove and replace the fuel filter. You do not need any additional tools.
